Garden Tips - Encouraging Birds
Healthy landscapes are habitats for insects and
birdlife. A well structured garden will develop a micro-climate which
sustains not only aesthetically pleasing plants, but a wide range of
winged visitors. The spring harbingers such as robins, bluebirds and
goldfinches enliven new growth; hummingbirds invade new blossoms.
Several species of butterflies feed on indigenous plants. Songbirds
daily consume their own weight in insect pests, a patrolling avian
fleet, as well as being a source of garden animation.
Throughout the summer and into the winter, a well stocked garden can provide a food
source for hundreds of migrating species; berry bushes such as
Serviceberry, Chokecherry and Nannyberry are ideal, as are the large
seed producing plants. Blue jays, cardinals, sparrows and other
over-wintering birds seek the protection of shrubs and find sustenance
in well-chosen plant material all winter long. Standing water birdbaths
should be refreshed regularly to avoid mosquitoes. Our designs
incorporate and encourage these envirnomental factors.
