Garden Tips - Tree Planting
Although it is ideal to plant trees before or after the growing season, trees that have been cared for properly in the nursery can be planted at any time. Identify all underground utilities, such as water and gas pipes, before you begin digging.
- Dig a broad hole, three times wide and once deep as the diameter of the root ball.
- Place the tree carefully, so that the trunk flare or crown is still exposed. Keep the tree straight; it is difficult to reposition once you begin to backfill.
- Once the hole has been filled to about 1/3, firmly pack the soil and remove the remaining string if the tree is balled.
- Continue filling the hole, packing the soil and settling with water to avoid air pockets that may dry out the roots.
- Add a 3" layer of mulch around the base of the tree without covering the trunk to protect from weeds, sudden temperature change and drought.
- See the Watering Schedule for further advice.
