Garden Tips - Black Walnut Advisory
The native black walnut tree, Juglans nigra, is a beautiful shade tree with furrowed bark, compound leaves, and delicious nuts. While an excellent tree on its own, it can cause problems in a garden setting. Black walnut trees release a compound from their roots that inhibits the growth of many other plants, reducing competition for resources. Unfortunately, stunted growth, wilting and death will occur in susceptible plant species. The following are some plants that are tolerant to black walnut trees:
Burning Bush |
Clematis |
Daffodil |
Shasta Daisy |
Daylily |
Christmas Fern |
Fescue Grass |
Forsythia |
Hemlock |
Honeysuckle |
Hosta |
Bearded Iris |
Most Junipers |
Lilac |
Mock Orange |
Ornamental Onion |
Ostrich Fern |
Periwinkle |
Phlox |
Primrose |
Redbud |
Speedwell |
Trillium |
Virginia Creeper |
